Spicy Subscriptions Deluxe Spice Box – February 2014 Valentine’s Review

This is my experience with Spicy Subscriptions – an adult toy and accessory monthly subscription. I am extremely unhappy.This is their February 2014, Valentine’s Day, Deluxe Spice Box.

On the first of this month (February, 2014) I signed up for their Deluxe Spice Box for $34.95 a month. There were two options – a Spice Box, or the Deluxe (which included a few more items). So I went with the more bang for my buck option.

When signing up, I was prompted that if I was a US resident, I could order by February 8th to receive their Valentine’s Day box. Score! It was the first, I made the deadline.

Shortly after ordering, I received an email confirmation stating my first box would be shipped during the first 10 days of March. I was confused.. so I went back, and took a screenshot of their site (with the pop-up about the Feb. 8th deadline), to email the company. The email I got told me I could either get the February box and forfeit my March box, or I could wait and get the March box. However, I would be billed TWICE before ever receiving a box. So, I went ahead with February.

My February box arrived yesterday, and this is what I received:

My very first reaction was, “Is this a joke? A PEN?”. A ballpoint company pen, with a two inch piece of feather boa glued to the top. I didn’t receive any of the “sample oils and lubricants” it states I should have received. So this means that this pen is worth $6? I mean, if I wanted a pen, I would have gone to Target and got one. I don’t understand how this fits into an Adult Subscription box.

The toy was alright, and the oil was small, but fine. However, this card game, “31 Sexual Favors”, is worded as though a grandmother is trying to coach us. With cards like, “Lick and tease his privates with your mouth and tongue”, and, “Have him spank you while making love”. It’s hard to keep a straight face! Can anyone take this seriously?

I pull their site up again, still confused about this box. I could have sworn I was supposed to receive more than 4 items (+ a pen).

Their site, now different than when I placed my order, gives two very different descriptions of what you will receive in your box. The first is this, which is only giving the description of a “Spice Box” (the lower “level” of the two choices):

And one pen.. I still can’t get over this one.

So, the box I received is lacking MORE than what I would get in a “Spice Box” for less money.

You click “View Boxes”, and it takes you to a where you choose which box you want. The description at the bottom (pictured) doesn’t change, regardless of which option you choose.

Still, this is less than what is advertised. Based on either description, this box contained less than what I paid for.

At this point, I’m feeling very frustrated. I contact a few other people that received the same box this month, and they all received the same. We were all deceived.

I email the company, asking why I received less in my box than what I was told I would get, and I got this reply (click image to view larger)..

Apparently, it’s a gamble whether or not you actually get what you paid for with this company. Not only that, but they state the samples are an “added bonus” and do not contribute to it’s cost.. yet, the card they sent me, states those items (that weren’t included) are worth $6. However, I am still not understanding how a ballpoint writing pen is a “sample” in an Adult Box.

So I take to Facebook. My post on their Facebook page, asking if anyone had received their box and stating that I felt something was missing, was deleted (after people posting they agree). My posting capabilities revoked. Minutes later, Spicy Subscriptions posts this on their Facebook page..

Professional, eh?

Now, as upset as I am that I feel their box was misrepresented and their customer service lacking, the only thing I asked is for a partial refund. Refund me half of my money, since I only got half of my box.

As of yet, this request has gone unanswered, and a Paypal dispute opened.

My advice, to anyone who is looking to sign up for an Adult Subscription Box, is to go with a company other than “”Spicy Subscriptions”. They have false advertisements every which way. They say “Cancel Anytime!”, however, you are unable to actually log into your account to do so. You are greeted with an error message. Despite multiple people complaining about this, the problem has not been fixed. The only way to cancel is to email the company, to which they ignore. The only way to get a response to an email asking for cancellation, is to post on their Facebook page.

I subscribe to various other monthly subscriptions – mostly beauty – all of which have spot on customer service. If you have a problem, places like Ipsy, BirchBox, BoxyCharm and Beauty Box 5, are quick to resolve whatever issue, or answer any question, you may have. I expected more from Spicy Subscriptions, considering the price of their monthly box, $34.95!

  1. I also felt that something was missing from my box and was going to contact the company. In glad I saw this before I did so. Atleast I know I’m not the only one that felt that way. It took me 6 emails into the company for them to actually respond back and cancel my membership. I’m so disappointed, definitely thought more of the company.

  2. Me too have the same problem, and I also was like Whhat? on the pen, and I sooo agree with on everything, and I also have tried to cancel this subscription, I have emailed them so many times in a month and no response. Any advice on what should I do?

  3. I thought this box was awful! I also could not get over the pen i couldn’t believe it when i saw it…. I signed up and had issues from the start, i emailed them just asking when this would have been delivered and they canceled my account with out even asking me. Now they wont even reply to any emails i send. I guess i lucked out with them canceling. The costumer service is terrible…

  4. i also agree i just got mine today and it was terrible i thought it was a perfect time to sign up with Valentines day and that it would be a great box… no i received the same thing as you did and a tickle pen? lmao ya okay im going to tickle my husband with a PEN! didn’t get any samples as it advertised i would im also going to open a Paypal dispute about this after i contact them and see what they have to say for themselves …that’s if i get an answer back..

  5. I never got the February box even though I subscribed in-time according to their face book post. After I placed my order I got an email stating that I would be getting my first box in March so I emailed them on the 10th and just today got an email. 10 days later but according to their website I should have received a response within 24 hours and I have yet to see a refund reflecting in my bank account which I requested back on the 10th as well. The email they sent me said they “ran out of Valentine boxes and I was probably one of the last people to sign up but March should be awesome!” Um….. no thanks I don’t want a box now. I just want my money back.

    1. I just filed a complaint with better business bureu and I encourage you to do the same. If you do, make sure you state that they are in New York, not Chicago like the website states.

  6. I wish I had found this post sooner but after receiving the March box I have been on a hunt to find others with negative experiences like mine. Okay, yes the pen was bad, the cards were lame, BUT the one thing in the box I was most excited about (the La Reve toy) didn’t even work! So I actually emailed them, told them it didn’t work and miraculously they actually sent me a replacement in my March box! BUT that one didn’t work either! And to make matters dramatically worse, when I was removing the batteries to see if they would work in the old toy, one exploded all over me! Luckily it didn’t shoot me, my bf, or my dog in the eye and the battery acid went all over a towel and not my skin, but it scared me so bad and I was in such shock I couldn’t stop crying for like 10 mins! There was a battery in my January box that had exploded in the little ziplock bag it came in, but I thought maybe somehow it was my fault bc I had traveled with it in my suitcase even tho it was in a car and not exposed to extreme heat, cold or change in air pressure, but after this month I now know these are defective cheap products they are putting in these boxes! I just seriously hope this has not happened to anyone else and that no one else could have potential bodily harm because of this sham of a company! I emailed them earlier today and still have yet to hear a response. My experience has been HORRIBLE with these people. First, I signed up for 8 months, and like many others have said, they charged my account the $210 twice causing me to nearly overdraft. Second, I got my “box” the last week in Jan after sending three emails asking where it was. It didn’t come in the cute little Spicy Box, it looked like bottom of the barrel leftovers stuffed in this ugly plain cardboard box. Third, the February box was dramatically lacking in product (which the description of the “Deluxe” box has changed on their website since I subscribed) and although it did arrive on Valentine’s Day, there was not one item I ended up using with my bf. And finally, the exploding battery in this March box just sent me over the edge and I cannot tell enough people to BEWARE of this horribly cheap and now dangerous service! PLEASE DO NOT BUY A SUBSCRIPTION!!

  7. I as well am having the worst experience with them! They have charged me for 3 boxes and I have only received one! Part of it is the post offices fault, but the customer service is horrible at Spicy. They want to charge me to send the box that the post office returned to them! What?!! Avoid at all costs this is a scam.

  8. I have not had a good experience with this company at all! Cancelled our account in December because I hate when things auto-renew, got the “yes, you have cancelled” email 8 days later (not particularly speedy – I mean come on, takes 8 days to respond to an inquiry??), and now come April we got charged again! VERY unhappy with this company! And the deluxe box apparently only comes with 3 items now??? They changed the description of the boxes during four month sub we bought, and now it definitely feels like we’re getting cheated. Their customer service is so incredibly bad and I would NEVER EVER recommend this company to anyone ever!

    P.S. We’ve filed a dispute with our credit card company – Spicy said they would cancel our account (again!) and refund the charge in 3-5 business days. Today is business day 5. I’m not holding my breath.

    P.P.S. I wasn’t particularly happy with the valentine’s day box either, but to turn on that toy, you had to hold the button down for 3-4 seconds. It wasn’t particularly well designed, and if I hadn’t gotten an extra product (problem with the January box), I would have been extremely disappointed instead of just marginally unhappy. Jan was a pretty good box that made me happy I had found the site, Feb was questionably bad (but apparently samples don’t count as items), March was horrid (three things?! in the deluxe? what the heck?!), and apparently April is only slated to have three items as well. Their argument for March was that the glass toy was really expensive ($50 supposed retail price, you can find it for less than $11 on Amazon). Can’t wait till the April box comes in on Thursday (sarcasm). It feels like the company is about to fold very, very soon.

At first i loved Spice Box they always had something awesome in their boxes so for the February Box i canceled and reordered to get the Deluxe Box and the i also ordered the Toy of the Month box to get a lil more, seemed like a great deal and what woman couldnt use an extra toy right? Wrong. i got short changed big time, customer service was fast to reply and answer all my questions, and their solution was to give me the samples and things i didnt get in the previous box in the next one, so i was like ok, and waited for the March box…. no extra samples and no missing item from the last month and to top it off the deluxe toy and the toy of the month were EXACTLY the same.. so i again Emailed customer service… they were like oh we never put the same product in together.. are you sure they are exactly the same so i emailed yes! then no reply. Due to my busy schedule i forgot to cancel the April box and Toy of the month box, but then i thought maybe this will be their redemption back to the old box i used to love… NOPE. Fat Chance! I didnt even get the Toy of the Month this time. Im very upset and i feel so ripped off. Going to Cancel and Call BBB on them and tweet to everyone about it.

    1. I reported a complaint on the BBB website and I encourage you to do the same, it’s super easy. Just consider that they’re main location is actually in New York. They( spicy) delete all negative tweets and Facebook comments so don’t even bother. Good luck!
