Frozen Fruit for Snacks

Summer is hot, and sometimes it’s just hard to eat much. Staying hydrated and taking advantage of some of the fresher fruits is just one way to make your summer enjoyable.

Frozen fruit isn’t just for the blender to make yummmy fruit smoothies. Freezing bite-sized pieces of fresh fruits make for great snacks (and on really hot days, even dinner!) throughout the warm season.

Cut up watermelon, whole seedless grapes, peach chunks, raspberries.. the list goes on… place on a cookie sheet small enough to fit in your freezer – space the fruit so it isn’t touching and then freeze. I like to roll some fruits in sugar, like raspberries. If it sounds good, but you don’t want to use real sugar, you can always try one of the calorie free sweeteners like Pure Via or Splenda – I much prefer real sugar… just can’t get my taste buds to accept the other sweeteners.

I’m headed out to my dads to pick some fresh raspberries for freezer jam and frozen snacks… I just hope I manage to bring some home and don’t eat all those sun-kissed berries off the vine instead.

Ella, the italian greyhound, got a bee sting

By far one of the costliest of all bee stings, since I didn’t know what had happened….

We’d been inside all day and time was approaching when my granddaughter would be coming over for a visit (while her mommy went to work).. The boys and I let the dogs out. I peeked outside to see if everyone was ok. Everyone seemed to be interested in doing their own business.

I headed to the restroom to brush my teeth and put my hair up – I’ll pass on baby hands uncontrollably grabbing fistfuls of hair … when I heard Ella-Roo come crying into the house.

She found me in the bathroom and started climbing up my leg, her que for me to pick her up – she’s a little thing, though not a small iggy, she loves me to hold her. She was crying and holding her leg up.

She was crying so much I couldn’t get her to stop… all the dogs were trying to kiss her and love on her and she was nippy… at one point she tucked her snout in between the couch cushions and while her muscles quivered, she cried into the couch. Pitiful.. broke my heart.

After 10 minutes of not being able to calm her, I put some ice on it (she didn’t like) and gave her 1/2 tablet of tramadol. It still took another 10-15 minutes before she quieted.

By this time her foot was swollen. I feared a break, it wasn’t until a little later I thought it may be a bee sting… but with their skinny legs I felt better safe than sorry.

I took her up to the vet, where she had to stay a couple hours, because they were so swamped and had to squeeze us in… and it was just likely a bee sting, no breaks thank goodness. A steriod, a dose of benadryl, a couple of xrays, and a bottle of take home dog pain medication (I like to keep it on hand for them) and $200 lighter… my girl is finally acting more normal, but still favoring her foot.

Transfer a domain from GoDaddy

I had a domain expiring soon. I went to my host (bluehost.com) to renew it and realized it was one I purchased from godaddy.com. GoDaddy.com is more expensive for domains than my hosting company. I decided to just transfer the domain.

In my host control panel, I clicked on domain manager, then on the domain about to expire. I was given a few options to choose. I ticked the transfer domain option. It asked for an EPP, a.k.a. Extensible Provisioning Protocol, code, which I needed to find from godaddy.

So off to godaddy.. once logged in there, I navigated over to the domain manager page. I clicked on the domain I needed to renew and wanted to transfer. To initiate the transfer make sure your domain is unlocked – otherwise, keep your domains locked and safe. Then, under Domain Information, click “Authorization Code – Send by Email” This will quickly send a code to you via your email.

Enter this code into the request from your host. On the next page, my host sent a verification email to me with another code.. it came quickly and I finalized the purchase.

Now, typically it can take a few days (like 4) to transfer the domain from godaddy to the new registrar… but if you don’t want to wait around for it, head back to your godaddy Domain Manager. In the current design there are tabs across the top, one says “Domains”. If you hover over it, you’ll see the option “Pending Transfers”. Click it. From there choose the domain you just transferred. Click “Accept” and the process will complete within minutes, rather than the standard days.

Several years ago, a friend of mine, Heidi (from Healthy Kids Snacks) ran a great magazine, called Mindful Mother Magazine. We had so much fun with it too! We decided to transfer to a new hosting company.. but somewhere along the way our domain transfer was done wrong.. and we lost the name. The registrar who snatched our domain up wanted $80 for us to buy it back… we were having more fun with the whole thing than making any money from it. It was an expensive lesson.

If you need help transferring your domain and this didn’t help enough, give your host a call. They will be happy (or should be) to help you get things done.

Earth Song Lyrics by Michael Jackson

Artist : Michael Jackson
Songwriters: Larson, Melvin E.; Marcellino, Jerry A.
Song : Earth Song

(note from Momma Muse…. beautiful song)

What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain…
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine…
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we’ve shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?

Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah

What have we done to the world
Look what we’ve done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son…
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine…
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores

Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah

I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don’t know where we are
Although I know we’ve drifted far

Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah

Hey, what about yesterday
(What about us)
What about the seas
(What about us)
The heavens are falling down
(What about us)
I can’t even breathe
(What about us)
What about the bleeding Earth
(What about us)
Can’t we feel its wounds
(What about us)
What about nature’s worth
(ooo, ooo)
It’s our planet’s womb
(What about us)
What about animals
(What about it)
We’ve turned kingdoms to dust
(What about us)
What about elephants
(What about us)
Have we lost their trust
(What about us)
What about crying whales
(What about us)
We’re ravaging the seas
(What about us)
What about forest trails
(ooo, ooo)
Burnt despite our pleas
(What about us)
What about the holy land
(What about it)
Torn apart by creed
(What about us)
What about the common man
(What about us)
Can’t we set him free
(What about us)
What about children dying
(What about us)
Can’t you hear them cry
(What about us)
Where did we go wrong
(ooo, ooo)
Someone tell me why
(What about us)
What about babies
(What about it)
What about the days
(What about us)
What about all their joy
(What about us)
What about the man
(What about us)
What about the crying man
(What about us)
What about Abraham
(What was us)
What about death again
(ooo, ooo)
Do we give a damn

Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah

Michael Jackson’s Billy Jean (lyrics)

Billy Jean Lyrics

She was more like a beauty queen from a movie screen
I said, don’t mind, but what do you mean I am the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round

She told me her name was Billy Jean as she caused a scene
And every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one
Who would dance on the floor in the round

People always told me
Be careful what you do
Don’t go around breaking young girls’ hearts
And mama always told me
Be careful who you love
Be careful what you do
Because a lie becomes the truth

Billy Jean is not my lover
She’s just a girl who
says that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says that I am the one
But the kid is not my son

For forty days and for forty nights
The law was on her side
But who could stand when she’s in demand
With her schemes and plans
‘Cause we danced on the floor in the round
So take my strong advice
Just remember to always think twice
[Billy Jean lyrics on http://www.elyricsworld.com]

(Do think twice)

She told my baby we danced ’til three
Then she looked at me
And showed a photo of my baby crying
His eyes were like mine
So we danced on the floor in the round

People always told me
Be careful what you do
Don’t go around breaking young girls’ hearts
But she came and stood right by me
I could smell her sweet perfume
I guess it happened way too soon
She called me to her room

Billy Jean is not my lover
She’s just a girl who
Claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
Billy Jean is not my lover
She’s just a girl who
Says that I am the one
But the kid is not my son

She says I am the one
But the kid is not my son

Billy Jean is not my lover (repeat 15 times)

Billy Jean, based on a true situation, was on the Thriller album, but almost didn’t make it because the producer didn’t like it. The video was one of the first played on MTV by a black artist.

877-648-0958 – Creepers

Got this 8-hundred number while I was eating some lunch.  Showed up at 1(877) 648-0958.

My cell number is private – in that when I have business stuff (banks, credit cards, etc) I give a different number… so I knew caller wasn’t necessarily “important”.  Just phone spam.

I answered and got a recorded speil about how they are calling about my credit card, not to worry, nothing serious, just that they might be able to lower my interest rates, etc.  To please press 1 for more information.

So I pressed one.  The man who answered didn’t give me a name and I didn’t think to ask for one.  I just thought I’d politely ask to have my cell number removed from their accounts.. which I said.  He told me No.  Just plain and simple.

Stuttering I told him, no this is a private number and it needs to be removed or I’d report their company.. he asked to whom?  Which stumped me because I don’t know.. so I just restated he needed to take my number off their accounts.. he replied that I needed to take my underwear off..

Yep, read that right.  The perv telemarketer told me to take my underwear off.

Now, I could totally get upset, call them back (half expect the number won’t take incoming calls) and try to raise a stink, but likely there are a handful of “telemarketers” all scamming people out of credit card info.. and when they get a call like mine, they are all probably laughing their butts off at the guy telling me I need to take my underwear off.

What scuzzy creepers.  Ick.s

Michael Jackson Dies at age 50

My daughter just sent us a text, Michael Jackson died…apparent heart attack and was rushed to the hospital.

NOTE: maybe he’s not dead, maybe just in a coma! No, really, he has passed away….
Michael Jackson, Dies at 50

And yes, it’s all over the news.. but I can’t access any articles on it.  Talk about news.

I wasn’t a huge fan of his, not sure why I feel a loss, or sort of sad.  Maybe just because he was such an icon when I was growing up, a teen in the 80’s.

Thriller made the most memerable impression.  It came out when my sister was just a few years old.  She loved to watch the video (you know, when MTV was new and actually played music  videos all the time).  But she’d leave the room until the little “movie” at the beginning was over.  When it was done, I’d call for her to come back in and we’d watch and sing… never did dance with it though.. we just couldn’t compete with that dancing, lol.

He appeared to be in bad shape, mentally, physically and financially.  Ah, well.. sad news.

Egads… I hate doing wordpress updates

Just upgraded Momma Muse to the newest version of wordpress.  I never get too far behind as I get stressed out knowing I’m not “up to date”.  On the other hand, with all the plugins I use, doing the actual update is stressful.

Tonight was not fun.  I backed up my database, backed up the blog and upgraded… once installed, I had to activate all my plugins.. and everything broke.  I got the fatal error not enough allotted memory.  I thought for sure I would have to call the domain host to have them do something from their end.  But I was able to edit the php.ini file and wa-lah… all was good again.  Well.. something was wonky with my background color, so I just set it to white.  I’ll mess with it another day.

But I am wondering.. how many plugins do I really need?  Hmmmm…..

Flowers to Attract Hummingbirds

Hanging a hummingbird nectar feeder or two around your yard is a nice way to ensure the little hummers always have something to eat when flowers may not be in full bloom. Here’s an easy homemade hummingbird nectar recipe.

From the annual plant, to the blooming tree, plants of all variations in your flowerbeds or containers not only add to the beauty of your yard or patio, but with a little planning can provide food and shelter for several different critter species (think hummingbirds, butterflies, bees (pollinators), toads, not to mention insects like praying mantis). Perennials are good for future years since they come back year after year. Annuals are only good for one growing season, but add beauty and function too.

While hummers are attracted to the color red, your garden need not be all red flowers. There are plenty of flowers which bloom in other colors that will feed your visitors. With a little planning, you will be able to have blooming flowers for your hummingbirds most of the season.

Perennial Flowers for Hummingbirds

Bee Balm

Bee Balm, (Monarda) a member of the mint family and considered an herbaceous perennial, grows about 2-4 feet tall in full sun. It is indigenous to Eastern North America. Bee Balm produces tubular flowers which bloom in mid to late summer. Hardiness zones 4-9. Blooms are red or light purple color.

Bee Balm has culinary and medicinal uses, as well as attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. Dead-head bee-balm flowers to force another bloom.

Blue Lobelia, (Lobelia siphilitica), grows 30″-36″ and blooms a spikey deep blue  during  August-September.

Canna, sometimes known as the Canna lily, though not of the lily family, have large attractive foliage.  The flowers are typically red, orange, or yellow or any combination of those colours and are small, hidden under extravagant stamens. These flowers were meant to attract pollenators like bees, hummingbirds and even bats.

Cardinal Flower – hybrids grow up to 4 feet tall, while the wild counterparts grow to 2 feet.  Hummingbirds love the intense scarlet flowers.  Blooms July through September.  Requires moist (not saturated) and never dry soil in partial shade to sun.

Columbine

Red Columbine, (Aquilegia), makes a useful plant for hummingbirds. It blooms early in the year, just in time for the hummingbirds migrating north. Plant in sun or light shade, zones 2-8. The tiny birds will hover in place under the plant and lap the nectar from underneath the bloom. Columbine also comes in purple, blue, yellow, white, peach and pink. Super easy to grow by seed.

Cigar Flower

coral bells

Coral Bells, (huechera), zone hardiness 3-8. They do well in partial shade, particularly in hot climates. Rather smallish pretty little pink flowers on long stems form a sort of haziness over large leaves.  There are several native varieties (around 35).. some more showy than others.  I believe mine (shown in picture) is a Purple Palace.  This is another plant where dead-heading may produce another bloom.

Foxglove – a biennial, see Annuals and Biennials for Hummingbirds

hosta

Hosta is a shade loving plant.  Leaf colors vary from shades of blue to green to yellow and some variegated in white/cream.  The stalks, or scapes can be more than 30 inches and produce pendulous-like flowers blooming white, lavender, or violet in color and usually scentless.  Not only do hostas attract hummingbirds, but also deer, slugs and snails.  I have a few planted and while the snails and slugs do their share of snacking, the hostas always bloom.  Separate when they start coming up and it’s easy work.  The number of genus isdebated, there could be up to 45 different types.

Hummingbird Mint blooms summer through late fall.  It has fragrant foliage and flowers; attracts hummingbirds.  Different varieties have differing zone hardiness, so check for your area.  Full sun to part shade.  Grows 1-4 feet with the same in spread. Flowers are orange/ salmon and pink flower.

Lantana grows 3 to 4 feet tall; full sun to part shade.  Blooms pink, purple, red, yellow and orange.  Depending on the plant can bloom from late winter all the way through late fall- check each variety. Perennial in the southern states, grow as an annual in others.

Lupine hardiness zones 3-9, grows 1 to 3 feet tall.  Takes full sun.  They produce spikes of pea-like flowers and blooms yellow, white, red, blue and pink during the summer months.

Yucca the plant produces 8-foot spikes of nodding, bell-shaped, fragrant white flowers, sometimes tinged purple, to 2 inches long.  Grows 6-10 feet tall with a spread of up to 6 feet.  Drought tolerant, requires full sun; blooms early to late summer.
